David Carlo Chery, 40, of Manassas, was charged with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer on Tuesday, Dec. 13, after he got incensed with investigators as they spoke with him about a separate crime at a local 7-Eleven location.

Police say that shortly before 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning, officers from the Prince William County Police Department responded to investigate a reported larceny that was reported at the 7-Eleven location on Daniel Stuart Square in Woodbridge.

While investigating, officers said they located Chery - who matched the description of the suspect provided by the store clerk - in the parking lot of a different nearby business.

According to a police spokesperson, following a brief investigation, officers attempted to take Chery into custody, to which he “actively resisted and refused to follow the officer’s commands.”

After a brief struggle, during which Chery struck an officer in the face and grabbed his radio, causing it to break, he was taken into custody without further incident. The officer reported suffering minor injuries.

Chery was charged with:

  • Assault and battery on a Law Enforcement Officer;
  • Obstruction of justice;
  • Destruction of property;
  • Petit larceny.
  • He is being held without bond pending his next court date.
